Let's start from the beginning, what is the FaceApp?

FaceApp is a free photo-editing app that is available on both the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, which means, whether you have an Android phone or an iPhone, You can use it to add glasses, change your hair color, style, makeup or smile, among many other features.

Some of which are limited to premium in-app subscription purchases. You can even swap gender if you'd like. you also have the ability to make yourself look old or young.

Where does FaceApp come from?

FaceApp was developed by a small team in Russia and has been a popular photo editing app for years.

Before aging filter, It went viral in 2017 for a very different reason; its "ethnicity filter"; an option to make your face different races. After being criticized for this racist filter, the company removed this filter.

FaceApp and how it works?

As the FaceApp company mentions in its description, this is done with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). But It’s really not, it’s just an algorithm takes the input picture of your face and adjusts it based on other imagery.

This makes it possible to insert a toothy smile, for instance, while adjusting lines around the mouth, chin, and cheeks for a natural look.

What about privacy?

Well, it depends. If you are an iPhone user, you have absolutely nothing to fear, FaceApp can only take the picture you select no more. The reason for that is because starting from iOS 11, any application that requires access to you gallery to pick an image, the application in use will only have access to the photo you’ll select, you can see all the images you’re choosing from, the application doesn’t, this was pretty clear in Apple WWDC, you can find more here…

When it comes to Android phones, we all know that’s it’s not that secure, once you grant photo access to an application, it will be for all your photos, screenshots, and videos.

The FaceApp doesn’t force you to register, you can simply give it the same information you have on your Facebook account, using Facebook AccountKit SDK, and also Google Firebase SDK.

If you trust Facebook and Google, you gotta trust FaceApp, comparing the numbers of permissions that Facebook and Instagram have on your phone to the two permissions that FaceApp has access to.

But in the end, it’s all a matter of perspective, you can follow these privacy tips to protect yourself.
